Generation 2: Johto

Gold and Silver added 100 species and, uniquely, let players revisit all of Kanto after finishing Johto. They introduced the Dark and Steel types, breeding and eggs, held items, a real-time day and night cycle, and Shiny Pokémon. Crystal followed as the first game with a playable female character.

Johto is home to the Legendary beasts Raikou, Entei and Suicune, the tower guardians Lugia and Ho-Oh, and the Mythical Celebi. Its starters are Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile. Many of its new species are cross-generation evolutions of Kanto Pokémon, such as Crobat, Steelix and Espeon.
